Can My Partner or Spouse Come to My Therapy Sessions?

This is one of the questions I hear most often, and the answer is often yes.
All Heart Counseling focuses on Individual Counseling. One person is the client, and the work stays focused on what the person is going through. That does not mean therapy has to happen without the involvement of the important people in your life.
Brief Family and Partner / Spouse Interventions
There are times when involving a spouse, partner or family member directly supports the work a client is doing. Brief Family and Partner / Spouse Interventions are available at All Heart Counseling and can be an invaluable part of individual care.
A spouse or family member might participate in order to:
Better understand what you are living with, whether that is PTSD, dissociation, depression, anxiety or something else
Learn what actually helps during a difficult moment and what tends to make it harder
Address a specific concrn at home that is getting in the way of your progress
Understand changes they have noticed in you since counseling began
Help reinforce the progress you are making between sessions
Being close to someone who is struggling can leave a partner feeling helpless, shut out, or unsure what to osay. These session often give them something concrete to do with that.
Throughout, you remian the client. The focus stays on you and what you are working on, and whether these sessions make sense is something we decide together.
This Is Different From Couples Therapy
The difference is who the counseling is for.
In a Brief Family or Spouse Intervention, one person is the clinet. Your spouse or family member takes part in service of your care..
In couples therapy, the relationship itself is the client. The work belongs to both of you. That structure matters, because it means neither partner comes in as the problem to be fixed, and I am not there to take a side.
This difference between individual and couples work matters most when insurance is involved. Health insurance is generally structured around medically necessary treatment for one person's diagnosed mental health condition. Becuase couples and relationship counseling focuses on the relationshipo rather than one person's diagnosis, I do not provide it through All Heart Counseling, and I do not submit insurance claims or superbills for it.b
If what you and your partner are actually looking for is couplesl counseling, I offer that privately through a separate practice, Deep Heart's Core, at 216-499-5192.
